Vazhalikkavu Bhagavathy Temple

Divine Tranquility on the Banks of Bharathapuzha

Vazhalikkavu Bhagavathy Temple, nestled on the serene banks of the Bharathapuzha River near Painkulam, is a revered spiritual hub in Thrissur district. Known for its centuries-old traditions and sacred ambiance, it is a cultural beacon of Kerala’s temple heritage.
Dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy, an incarnation of Durga, this temple is one of the most significant Bhagavathy shrines in the region. The temple architecture follows traditional Kerala styles, with a grand gopuram at the entrance and a sanctum sanctorum that houses the deity. The temple is also notable for its serene setting, surrounded by lush landscapes and the sacred Bharathapuzha river.

Bharathapuzha, also known as Nila, is Kerala’s second-longest river and has historically been a cradle of culture, literature, and spiritual traditions. Along its banks, one can find ancient temples, sacred groves, and remnants of Kerala’s vibrant artistic heritage. Vazhalikkavu has also gained fame for being a filming location for classic Malayalam movies such as Naghakshathangal, Oridathu, Paithrikam, Mazhavilkavadi, Valsalyam, Sallapam, Aaram Thampuran, and Ghodha.
